Achieving project milestones VS. Implementing HSE workplace rules
Every country in this world is attempting to make as many projects
as it could to develop the infrastructure and to establish new facilities that
will make the life of all people much easier. Making new projects will require
a lot of employees who come from different disciplines to come all together in
order to make that project happened on the ground. Thus, most of the time we
see joint venture of several number of companies become as consortium due the
size of the project and this is true especially on mega and giga projects which
is impossible for only one or two companies to achieve such sizes of these
projects.
Regardless of the consortium established, contractually every
company is responsible to complete specific part of that project which makes
every company to set its target dates of completion to prevent any possibility
of delay or conflict that could impact other companies works. Unfortunately, in
the real business world this is not always the case and project managers and
even project directors sometimes failed to set a plan ahead of time properly
and all of the sudden they just found themselves behind the schedule and now
they have to ask all project supervisors to push workers to work so hard and in
urgent mode in order to catch up putting workers lives in danger until this
project completed.
As result of rushing at workplace, workers will start to commit all
types of HSE violations such as shortcuts, not wearing PPEs, Not following HSE
procedures, do not pay attention to HSE representatives or listen to them…etc. All
these negative aspects will make the workplace safety culture to be so poor and
we’ll start to see the number of accidents and incidents, workers turnover,
injuries, and what’s worst we could see fatality cases on the project site due
to this huge negligence of HSE workplace rules. So, my dear project managers
and supervisors go ahead and achieve the project milestones but, but, make sure
100% that you achieving it SAFELY at all time instead of complaining about HSE
requirements and attempting to make them as roadblocks in front of the project
milestones progress.
Ptojects are always have uncertainties, that is must. If PM have understood this fact and prproactively respond to such incidents with humanistic manner, the situations you have explained can be avoided. So impacts of project deliverables will long last for beneficiaries and workers of the projects as well.
