Bad managers and the effectiveness of the organizations’ speak up system

Nowadays, the majority of the organizations had speak up systems which their names differ from company to another such as your voice is heard, deliver your message anonymously, contact the top management and get your rights, with us your grievance is always resolved, and so on and so forth. Even for those companies where they do not have this kind of system, you could still probably see top management representatives encouraging all employees to send an email to the top management if they want to raise a complaint or if they are not satisfied with something within the borders of their workplaces. All of us knew and as per the organizational hierarchy chart usually the senior managers reporting directly to the top management which making them to be very close to the top management due to the nature of their roles. So, the top management representatives are not necessarily fully aware of what’s exactly going on with these employees who are directly working under the management of the senior managers.

No one can hide the fact and deny the reality to admit that almost every organization has at least one bad manager who’s moody, not treating employees fairly, insulting employees and disrespecting them, using unethical words especially during the meetings, not listening to employees opinions and always believe that his/her opinion is the prefect one, creating a blaming culture among employees even if that mistake was made by him/her, in somehow he/she always trying to bring the employees down and never promoting them even if they deserve to be promoted. What is truly funny is that himself/herself is not qualified or competent enough to be in that position and this is what exactly happened when you put the wrong person in the wrong place.

Thus, you will start to see employees who are trying to study all available alternatives to stop being insulted every single day by their bad managers. So, speak up system might solve the issues and it’s basically a system that enables any employee to confidently and optionally anonymous to raise his/her complaint about something wrong in the company and it’s not only limited to report about bad managers attitudes and behaviors but, also if your management forcing you to work overtime without any kind of substitution e.g., money or days off, forcing you to preform work that is out of your scope of work, harassment, bullying, bribery, corruption, etc.

This system is put in place to serve you as a company employee to guarantee your full rights, but do not think that when you as employee raise a complaint against your bad manager or against something wrong within your company through this system that everyone will instantly believe you without any evidences and that’s why it’s very significant to document everything you do to have some sort of proofs that you might need to use in the future and as we always said if you do not document it, you lose it. However, in the real business world this wonderful speak up system does not necessarily function efficiently and it could be used against you as employee.

I am pretty sure that some of you have already heard about some employees who raised a complaint against their bad managers and they simply have lost their jobs as result of theirs complaints even though they were right and they had all the evidences that confirming their cases. Unfortunately, this is totally true especially if someone is working in an organization that is administratively corrupted from the top management all the way down to the shop floor. Therefore, in the country level we had labor law that protect all employees’ rights and if you ever been in this situation, instead of being a victim of that company you must escalate your case to the local labor office to get all your rights back as per hosted country’s regulations and rules.

  1. Well said bro! These systems sometimes don’t guarantee privacy and secrecy to employees. The “Speak Up” system we have in our company, which I am sure you are very familiar with, doesn’t accept any complaint unless you reveal your name. That’s why I have never used it before!

Top management must consider building systems that ensure integrity and security for employees. By doing so, they will definitely receive more feedbacks.

I have really enjoyed your article and looking forward to reading more and more!

    Sincerely yours,
